Do you review free products on your blog?
If so, you might take note that Google has recently issued its new Webmaster guidelines on “Best practices for bloggers reviewing free products they receive from companies” last March 11, 2016.
Google has commented that as a form of on-line advertising, some companies in these days will ship bloggers some free merchandise to review or mention their product in a blog post. Because of this practice, they published these Webmaster guidelines to ensure that content is both useful to users and is compliant with the original Google Webmaster guidelines.
Here is a summary of their guidelines:
Only Use the Nofollow Tag When Necessary
Links that pass in PageRank in exchange for goods or offerings are against Google recommendations on link schemes. These companies repeatedly urge bloggers to link back to the company’s site, the company’s social media accounts, an online seller website that sells the product, a review service website that features actual reviews of the product or the company’s mobile app sold on the app store.
In line with this, bloggers should use the nofollow tag on those links because those links are not provided naturally but coming from external companies. These companies should also remind these bloggers to use nofollow tags on these links.
Disclose Your Affiliation With the Company
The blogger should divulge their tie-up with the company. Users have the right to know whether they’re viewing sponsored content or not. Also, there are laws in some nations that make disclosure of the sponsorship mandatory. A disclosure can be placed anywhere in the post; however, the most useful placement is at the top of the blog post in case customers don’t get to read the entire post.
Make Unique Yet Compelling Content
Successful blogs are able to offer their viewers compelling reasons that can make the latter come back again and again to the website. If you are a blogger, attempt to become an expert in your area or provide unique and exclusive content so that your readers will grow.
